“My husband has been coming here almost a year and a half now, three days a week,” says Linda, the wife of an adult day program participant. “I am trying to keep him active socially. I think he needs to be with people that get him.”
Adult day programs can offer relief to caregivers while providing a safe and social environment for their loved one.
“A good day care program is huge and something I would definitely tell people to do if they’re in my situation,” says Linda.
What Are Adult Day Programs?
According to the AARP, adult day programs provide a structured and supervised environment for adults. These programs offer a variety of organized activities that promote social interaction and enhance participants' quality of life. They can also provide caregivers with essential respite, allowing them to take breaks or attend to other responsibilities.
The National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) reports that many adult day program participants have cognitive impairments, such as dementia. Operating mainly on weekdays during standard business hours, adult day centers serve as an important community resource.
Adult day programs stand out for their specialized approach to care. Participants engage in activities suited to their abilities and interests, often alongside others in similar situations. Many programs also provide door-to-door transportation, making attendance convenient. This specialized care helps improve the quality of life for both participants and their caregivers.
Throughout the day, individuals may participate in activities like music therapy, art, or memory games. Emphasis is placed on social interaction through group discussions and games, fostering a sense of connection. Meanwhile, the team members provide warm and supportive care, ensuring participants' comfort and safety.
Beyond Adult Day Programs
Linda knows that soon it will be time for Barry to make the move into a memory care community. She feels this will be a smooth transition because Barry is already familiar with Villa at Terracina Grand’s team members, the other residents, and the community as a whole.
“The caregivers are all like family to him,” Linda says.
Adult day programs can provide enriching programming for families navigating early-onset dementia. These programs offer a nurturing environment where individuals can engage in meaningful activities and build connections with others who understand their experiences. For families like Linda and Barry, adult day programs not only enhance the quality of life for their loved ones but also provide peace of mind and a sense of community.
